Their recent fall is just sad:

Kinja'd!!!

I love the magazine, but their recent foray into sensationalist social media is disheartening to me :(

I guess I didn't understand why the backlash. For 25+ years, all the mags have put fake pics on their covers (and sometimes in articles). And with the mass media cable networks news outlets relying more on twitter and facebook — with a straight face — as part of their sources, I don't really get why MT went over the line in comparison with the current competitive norms. I say f*ck em all.

I liked Lago. I like Lieberman, Cammisa, and Pobst. I like(d) their YouTube stuff. I’m sure as hell not going to pay for it, though. That said, I enjoy reading Car and Driver quite a bit more.

Because they made it sound like an official reveal, when it was all complete hearsay.

I remember getting so much hate because I called out jalopnik for the “Is this what the next bronco will look like?” a month ago. The auto enthusiast hive mind is fickle and hypocritical.

Their social media campaign for the Apple car was basically them saying “WE HAVE INFORMATION LEAKED FROM APPLE” when the actual article had no such thing. It’s one thing to have fake pics, it’s another to make people believe it’s the real deal, then dupe them at the last second. :(

And even then so, it looks like the media as we know it is changing. More and more, people are calling for truth in media...people are tired of the lies from corporate media, people are tired of bloggers and writers pushing hateful agendas. People want more honest media, which is hard to find outside people here on Oppo and such.

Fair enough...but I still see this as selling out to competitive pressure. What goes on in the non-automotive media all day long is just as bad, if not worse (when reporting on life & death issues, etc). Fact-checking is now accepted as a thing of the past. Getting SOME story out there as early as possible, then asking for forgiveness later, is the norm. We need to boycott this shit EVERYWHERE for it to make a difference. Don't buy the mags, turn off the TV, and so on.

Yeah, I’m not a huge Ed Loh fan as he seems to be leading this social media weirdness.

They turn more and more into an automotive Buzzfeed every day. Like a few days ago they have an article about BMW’s “Second time around flops” or something like that and reading it I legitimately felt like I was reading something off Buzzfeed the way it was organized and written.

Not to mention this new website layout of theirs is absolute trash.

I think it’s less between the magazines and more to fight the terrible facebook/twitter accounts that dishonestly post renders. It’s yellow journalism for the 21st century.

Un-blockable Chevy ads everywhere last time I went there.

The youtube channel has gone downhill since Lago left. It’s a shame he left really, as his next gig was short lived. He grew from an intern, to featured personality/reviewer with MT, and was a great fit. I can’t understand why people aren’t more loyal to places that gave them bountiful opportunities.

Buzzfeed makes a good bit of money... there’s a good reason that it’s an appealing prospect, especially to a company that is still known mostly for being a print magazine.

Maybe he can jump start C&D’s YouTube channel.

Their entire publication is a Chevrolet ad.

At least they’ve been critical of the Z06's reliability failings, even calling it unfinished. However, I don’t think they’re as bad as people think.

Automotive Buzzfeed? You know that’s basically what Jalopnik and The Drive are, right?

Shoot, Road & Track dot com has become very much a news aggregator since Travis took over. It’s effectively Jalopnik 2.0.

Ever had someone dangle twice your current salary in front of you and an outwardly more prestigious position?

loyalty is great, but cash has an allure all its own.

Print media has been struggling for a while (and that includes print media that moved to digital) and they are losing their ass.

There’s a lot of desperation in what they do now- that wasn’t there previously.

No I haven’t, but it would take a lot to get me out of reviewing sports cars to write about the Kia Sportage.
